With the rapid development of urban transportation, the increasing number of various overpasses and elevated roads has brought about a class of secondary space - the space under the bridge. Its narrow, gray and depressing spatial characteristics have long been neglected and not effectively utilized. Bridges have gradually become the carrier of urban culture, image and quality, and the requirements for their design are getting higher and higher. Shanghai, as a city at the forefront of urban renewal, has begun to explore the transformation of under-bridge space in recent years and has achieved certain results.
In 2018, Shanghai Center for the Promotion of Urban Public Space Design initiated the "Walking Shanghai - Urban Space Micro-Renewal Program" of the "Activating Space Under Bridges" activity, aiming at the transformation of the space under bridges and bridges with shade and conditions for renovation. The aim of the activity is to renovate bridges with shade and conditions for renovation, in the hope of exploring innovative ways to effectively utilize space, stimulate new vitality, and sew up traffic barriers. As one of the pilot projects of "Micro Renewal to Activate the Space under Bridge", the micro-space renovation under Kaixuan Road Bridge in Changning Section of Suzhou Creek finally adopted the "Sugar Suzhou Creek" project, which won the prize of the campaign, and Jegoplay was responsible for deepening the design and implementation of the project.
Kaixuan Road Bridge is located near Kaixuan Road, Wanhangdu Road, Changning District, Shanghai. Originally, there was only a citizens' puzzle fitness point on the north side of the bridge, with a single function and color tone. The renovation plan takes lemon, circle and yellow as the design elements, and adds art exhibitions, sports and leisure, parent-child entertainment and other functions, creating a colorful "candy box" space.
In the interviews conducted by the news channel, citizens were quite satisfied with the remodeled space under the bridge: art pavilions, play facilities, fitness equipment, leisure seats and so on. It is a pleasant experience for people to stroll, stop or play under the bridge for a while.
The overall scheme is based on the concept of "Sugar Su River, Tasting Fragrant Fruit", and it is expected to use bright colors and fruit elements to form decorative elements embellished in the site, forming a characteristic landscape that integrates color, fragrance and taste. It is hoped to bring people back to the old times to experience Suzhou Creek in a slow and relaxed manner, so that people in the city who are in a hurry can also take time to enjoy the slow time.
Against the background of the overall concept, the designers combined the theme color "lemon yellow" with lemon as the creative point, and brainstormed 8 versions of the proposal, and finally used round colored steel and lemon yellow as the design elements, embellished with lemons, green leaves, straws, etc., to design the appearance of a cup of "Lemon Tea". "The equipment combines climbing, interactive, and fun. The equipment combines climbing, interaction, shaking and other functions, and art exhibitions, sports and leisure functions with each other, in the hope that the real convenience of the people, become a general "necessity" of the VC.
This children's play space consists of ropes, swings, megaphone and other facilities, round, curved design with a soft aesthetic pursuit, lemon slices, lemon leaves and other small elements of the decoration is full of children's interest. The ground is specially paved with plastic, which is elastic and guarantees the safety of children when playing. Thick drill net allows children to experience the fun of climbing, feel the spirit of upward. Straw shape of the microphone, fun, let the children play in the friendship multiplier. Swinging back and forth on the swing chair, while enjoying the modern city of traffic, while feeling the breeze of Suzhou Creek.
Considering the special characteristics of the space under the bridge, the designer, under the premise of maintaining the original state of the space, adjusted the position of the equipment, utilizing the original space "obstacles" to the right extent, and gave the site a "youthful vitality". In addition, the graffiti on the wall leading to the bridge combines the blue of the Suzhou River, the yellow of lemons, the ripples of the Suzhou River, and the round shape of lemons to create a picture of the future, which makes the transformation of the space under the bridge even more full of art and vitality.
As part of the Shanghai Urban Space Art Season, the practical examples of the Kaixuan Road bridge space will be a deepening interpretation and in-depth presentation of the theme of the main exhibition section in other parts of the city. The space under the bridge, which was once overgrown with weeds, dust and debris, has been transformed into an amusement park, and the former passageway, which always made people feel "messy", has been transformed into a veritable cityscape, which provides a richer and more diversified activity place for the neighboring residents and the riverfront recreation crowd, and also takes an important step in the exploration of the space under the bridge in Shanghai.
